OUR LAKE MICHIGAN SHORELINE IS SOMEHOW BETTER
With the arrival of spring, our coveted stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline takes on a brilliance defined by sculptures, flowers, dunes and ships of all sizes.

Sandhill Crane SculptureStunning Lakeshore Sculptures
The Mariners Trail, which connects Manitowoc to Two Rivers, is stunning on its own. Now add in spectacular sculptures and this trail becomes a must-see for nature and art lovers. View the newest public art installation, “Celestial Navigation,” a six-foot-tall blue heron made from recycled steel. It joins the “Dancing Sand Hill Cranes” sculpture that was installed last year.

Ancient Dunes
A guided hike is the best way for first-time visitors to experience the Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Preserve. There’s one set for May 14 that includes bird banding - children can participate too, sometimes holding the banded birds before they flutter away. Or, if you can’t get enough of the sound of frogs, visit June 4 for a hike to the frog pond.

Schooner Coast PromotionSchooner Coast
The Denis Sullivan, the world’s only recreation of a 19th century three-masted Great Lakes schooner, will be docked in Manitowoc June 25-26. It’s just one element of the Schooner Coast Promotion, which beckons visitors to explore lighthouses, shipwrecks, beaches and fishing villages in our area all summer long. Request a Savings Passport – it’s good at B&Bs, restaurants and shops as you make your way up and down the coast.

Sea of Flowers
More than 5,000 tulip and daffodil bulbs were planted in the fall at West of the Lake Gardens, so you can imagine the showy blooms gracing the gardens at the moment, heralding the tardy arrival of spring. You needn’t be a gardener to love this display.

Ship Model ContestNo Ordinary Model Ships
Exquisite model ships created by modelers from around the U.S. and Canada will be on display May 20-22 at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc to mark the 35th annual Midwest Ships and Boats Display and Contest.

Ocean Liner-esque
It’s a sight to behold - the last remaining passenger steamship in the country appearing on the horizon at night lit up like an ocean liner. The S.S. Badger begins service for the season May 26, traveling from Michigan to Manitowoc. Ride the ferry here or, if you’re already visiting our area, enjoy watching the comings and goings. Early Booking Fares available until May 25.
